Davis entered the war at the age of 36, one year younger than the age limit, and served on the front lines in France, Belgium, and Germany. In his memoir he explains his work observing and relaying artillery impacts from forward observation points to artillery troops firing from their positions on the front lines. Several typewritten letters chronicle his recovery in Army Medical Centers after he was wounded. Photocopied newspaper articles share some details of Davis' personal life before and after his time in the service.

Davis served in the U.S. Army European Theater during World War II from 1943-1945 as part of the Third Army.
